Article 5
Declaration of Human Rights
Good Morning/Afternoon class, today I will be discussing the importance of my chosen article number 5. This article declares, “No one shall be subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” I will be discussing the importance of civil rights and how it relates to the Declaration of Human Rights. Also, the significance and impact article 5 has on society nowadays.
"The term “torture“ means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing (forcing) him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence (agreement) of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffer."
Civil Rights are the right of citizens to political and social freedom and equality. Civil rights are defined as receiving equal treatments in a number of requirements such as housing, education and employment. Historically, civil rights were meant to be for African Americans to achieve equality to live a normal life without discrimination and being degraded. However, civil rights are defined nowadays as equality for all people regardless whether of their race, religion, sex, age, disability, national origin or natural characteristics.
Relating back to Declaration of Human Rights, civil rights allow people to live peacefully and freely and it helped create the articles of Declaration of Human Rights.
Article 5 has a big affect on society today. It clearly demonstrates the right of being free from torture or cruel punishments. It has shaped our society in many countries to be free from torture and any cruel or degrading punishment as we all have a right to life.
In conclusion, demonstrating the significance of article 5 on society, we should all be free from any cruel or inhuman punishments and to live a free and peaceful life. Also, civil rights have had an impact on creating the Declaration of Human Rights and every human should have a right to an equal life whether of any indifference.
