Albert Namatjira - born 28 July 1902 - 8 August 1959 (died 57), was an Indigenous Australia painter. He is best known for his watercolour paintings of the Australia outback landscape. His style of painting were not in the traditional style of Aboriginal art but they definitely formed the style of modern indigenous art in Australia. Albert was the first Northern Territory Aboriginal to be freed from restrictions that made Aboriginals wards of the state. He was the first Aboriginal person to be granted an Australian Citizenship which allowed him to vote, build a house and buy alcohol.
Charles Perkins - born 16 June 1936 - 19 October 2000 (died at 64). He was an Australian Aboriginal activist, soccer player and administrator. In 1965, he was a main member of the Freedom Ride, which was tour bus through NSW in small towns protesting discrimination against Aboriginal people. This protest was inspired by the US Civil Rights Freedom Ride campaign in 1961. This occurred to expose the living conditions, health and education conditions among the Aboriginal population.
Eddie Mabo - born 29 June 1936 - 21 Januray 1992 (died at 55). He was Australian man from the Torres Strait Islands known for his role in fighting for Indigenous land rights.
Archie Roach - born January 8 1956 and died at the age of 59. He was an Australian singer, songwriter and developed a powerful voice for Indigenous Australians, a storyteller in the tradition of his ancestors, and a nationally popular and respected artist.
Vincent Lingari - born 1908 - 1988 January 21. He was an Aboriginal rights activist. he worked as a stockman at the Wave Hill Cattle Station. He was elected to become the leader of the Gurindji communities in August in1966. On 7 June 1976, he became a Member of the Order of Australia for his services for the Aboriginal community.
Lowitja O'Donoghue - born 1 August 1932. She was an Aboriginal Australian retired public administrator for several Commonwealth organisations. She was the founding chairperson of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Comission (ATSIC). She was named Australians of the Year in 1984.
